Course Description:

The Intermediate course (Level II) is designed for general/breast surgeons who have completed and mastered Level I oncoplastic surgery training and techniques and are prepared for more advanced oncoplastic surgical techniques. The lectures will provide information on Level II strategies and techniques for delivering oncoplastic breast care and managing complications.

The afternoon will provide a hands-on surgical cadaver skills lab including a mastotrainer section for supervised practice of procedures taught in the morning lectures. Attendees will be assigned to stations to practice skin markings and Level II oncoplastic surgical techniques. Attendees will be provided with required reading material prior to the course.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Comfortably apply common volume displacement and replacement oncoplastic techniques and strategies in their practice by ways of understanding when to perform Level II oncoplastic surgery or collaborate with a plastic surgeon when performing oncoplastic surgery
  • Select the most appropriate oncoplastic procedures for individual patients
  • Gain knowledge about avoidance, early recognition and repair of complications of oncoplastic surgical techniques.

CME Credit Information:

The American Society of Breast Surgeons designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Cadaver Lab Preliminary Agenda:

Each attendee will be assigned to a station, led by a workshop faculty member, to perform all of the following procedures:

  • Skin markings and quadrant by quadrant decision making for type of volume displacement pedicle and skin marking use
  • Inferior pedicle development
  • Wise and vertical skin incision design with glandular tissue elevation
  • De-epithelialization
  • Basic description of some volume replacement flaps
  • Understanding of what constitutes an inferior dermal flap
